The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 includes nearly $15 billion for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. Speaking at the 2009 RESNET conference, Ed Pollock, Team Leader for the Residential Buildings Research Team of the DoE stated he sees a compelling need to:

  • train 1000's of energy auditors/raters
  • retrofit 5-10 million homes per year
  • reduce carbon output by 180 million metric tons

What does this mean for you? With 100,000,000 existing homes, an average cost of $450 for an Energy Audit or Energy Rating it means the potential market is $450 billion!

TRAINING-The First Step
The first step in becoming certified is to take a building science course. There are a number of trainers available to help you with this.

  • BPI refers to their trainers as "Affiliates", and they can be found under each state on the BPI website
(Damien attended the building science course at Kansas Building Science Institute and passed the RESNET HERS exam)
  • Saturn Resource Management offers online courses to prepare you for both BPI exams and the RESNET HERS rater exam
(Amy took the online course and passed the BPI Building Analyst exam)
In addition, Saturn has published the texbooks that are used by many trainers nationwide.

CERTIFICATION-The Second Step

  • Once you have completed a training course and passed your exam, you will need to either:
    1) schedule and pass a field test to demonstrate your competency to be certified by BPI, or
    2) Choose a RESNET provider and submit probationary ratings for their approval to be an approved HERS rater
